Myers Briggs Type IndicatorTM
Psychological type is a theory of personality
developed by the Swiss psychiatrist Carl G. Jung to explain
the normal differences observed to exist among people. Based
on his research, Jung concluded that differences in behavior
result from people's inborn tendencies to use their minds
in different ways. As people act on these tendencies, or preferences,
they develop patterns of behavior.
The MBTI is a self-report questionnaire designed to make Jung's
theory of psychological types understandable and useful in
everyday life and organizations. The authors of the MBTI,
Katherine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers, were themselves
keen and disciplined observers of human personality differences.
They studied and elaborated the ideas of Jung and applied
them to understanding the people around them, developing the
MBTI to give people access to this valuable information.
